If you are thinking of getting a new pet whether it is a cat or a dog, congratulations! There are many differences between cats and dogs and many advantages and disadvantages of each. I will provide you with some things to think about before you purchase your new family member.
Bathroom breaks: Dogs need to be let outside. This can be annoying if you have to stand outside with the dog or walk outside an apartment building with a dog. You will also need to pick it up. If you have a cat however, you can just scoop out the poop and it will not need to be let outdoors.
Feeding: Dogs eat a lot more than cats. If you are looking for a less expensive pet, I would suggest buying a cat. They only eat about a half cup of food per day. You may also need to buy canned food. This may be different if you need to buy a special type of cat or dog food.
Maintenence: Dogs and cats both need to be brushed. Dogs will need baths, cats will not. Cats clean themselves- that's how smart they are. Both will need their teeth brushed for healthy teeth. Dogs will shed more than cats will depending on the breed and if the cat has long hair or not.
Nails: Cats and dogs will both need their nails trimmed. If you are uncomfortable doing this, you can have the vet do it for you. Be very careful when trimming the nails or they will bleed. You can also get your cat declawed whereas your dog will probably scratch hard wood floors.
Problems: Dogs can get frequent ear problems. Cat's can get ear mites and ringworm. Both animals can get many illnesses. The key to avoiding illness is taking good care of your pet.
Walking: You can take your dog for a walk, but walking a cat is pretty rare. However, if you took your cat for a walk, it would be easier to control.
Riding in Cars: Some dogs are horrible riding in cars and so are cats. Both can be taught to ride well in vehicles. I have a dog and a cat that both ride in cars better than children.
Tricks: Dogs do better tricks than cats. It is possible to teach a cat tricks, but not as popular as teaching a dog tricks. A cat would look cuter doing the trick than a dog would.
